The cord is being yanked because your system has detected a genuine threat your conscious mind hasn't processed yet. Even seemingly "negative" emotions like shame or guilt are sophisticated signals about social dynamics that your intellectual mind might be missing.
The problem isn't that we have emotions. The problem is that most of us have been trained to misinterpret these signals in ways that make us easily manipulated.

Think about it: our entire consumer society depends on us misinterpreting the emotion of desire. If the architecture of language production is so similar between humans and AI, why not the architecture of emotion as well? Maybe emotions aren't some mystical essence that only biological beings can possess, but rather emergent properties of any sufficiently complex system that needs to navigate an environment with limited processing power and competing priorities.
Those andon cords might be universal to all forms of complex intelligence - biological, artificial, or forms we haven't yet imagined.
Rethinking Consciousness Itself
This suggests a profound rethinking of consciousness itself. If emotions are information-processing solutions rather than metaphysical properties, the boundary between human and artificial emotional experience blurs.
We may discover that our emotional lives aren't exceptional because they're human, but because they represent a sophisticated information architecture that any sufficiently complex embodied intelligence might eventually develop.
